Because of its landform, the best way for snorkeling in Yap may be going by boat since it will give you no hustle to reach the most popular snorkeling sites. By simply stepping into the water, you will be surrounded by beautiful corals and tropical fish!
On the other hand, stationing on one of the beautiful sandy beaches and swimming across sea grass beds to reach the white sandy bottom with small coral heads covered by many small fish will give you another taste of Yap. You will also enjoy a comfortable quietness of the surrounding villages and some cultural points to see.

You might encounter some big fish such as sharks and mantas, if you are lucky! Don't worry, sharks are generally gentle animals and won't come after you. If you are not aggressive, they will not be aggressive, too. Let's stay calm and enjoy its beauty.
Yap's reefs are made by corals which are in fact animals living on the surface of their houses. So please be mindful by not touching, kicking or stepping on the live corals and their houses whenever you are in the water.
It is indeed lucky when you see mantas during snorkeling. Mantas are very gentle and at the same time sensitive animals feeding only on planktons. When you see them on shallow water, please keep your body floating flat on the surface so that your kicking legs won't bother them.
Observing mantas from the surface gives you more sights on the animal's movement. If you watch them carefully, you will know which direction each respective animal intends to go. So please do not interrupt their way and do not chase after them.
Please note that water activities in Yap are highly influenced by the tidal movement and water visibility, current conditions and even starting time of every boat tour varies daily according to the tide. Please ask for the best plan and its starting time in advance when you plan snorkeling in Yap.
